2007 Vulcan Communities in Bloom
Communities in Bloom committee members were out and about at the end of July, meeting and talking with gardeners in town and with some rural residents in the county of Vulcan.
We enjoyed looking over the fences in backyards and sometimes peaking thru fences to see what wonderful ideas are hidden in Vulcan. There are so many of you doing a fantastic job!
It was really difficult limiting ourselves to a top 10 or 12. So we gave out 35 Awards!
We try and recognize different yards and gardens each year focusing on unique gardening ideas, beginning gardeners and most improved areas. Residential, groups and businesses were being looked at.
Many of you were improving your yards as we speak and so we look forward to seeing the results in future years.
With the very hot and dry conditions we took into account that some flowers and lawns would be past their prime. This is something to think about with global warming and water shortages.
We all love to see the lush green lawns and foliage that plants provide but it still can be attained with ‘Xeriscaping’. An interesting article can be read in the

700 – 800 Delegates from around the World are coming to Lethbridge, Alberta in September 17 – 20 2008. For the Communities in Bloom National Park and Grounds Symposium and Awards Ceremonies
The Vulcan Communities in Bloom committee and the Town of Vulcan have been asked to participate, which we both gladly accepted.
What does this mean? As part of the conference there will be a “Southern Alberta Showcase” and we will have the opportunity to have a display table, as well as be a part of the slide presentation of participating communities. There will be Out of Town tours and day trips for the delegates.
With the summer heat quickly passing by it would be a great time to start planning and implementing some Fall work in your yards. One ardent gardener suggested that perennials and bulbs be planted this year.
Doing a little now will save you from that overwhelming feeling of having to much and too little time next spring!
Let’s all get to work now and be at our best for next year’s showing!
The awards were chosen by two local untrained and unbiased Communities in Bloom members who enjoy gardening and recognize that so many in the community are really giving wonderful attention to their yards this year and every year.
Keep up the great work everyone!
