With over a ton of Alberta Bee …Turkey being served at the Barn, consumption is up this year. Lloyd Kunkel figures “when all is said and done, we will have served over 1 ton (2000 pounds) of turkey.
That's a lot of gravy.”
I have just spent the most enjoyable weekend listening to the Kunkel family entertain groups of visitors at the Great Canadian Barn Dance.
Starting with the warm welcome Trevor Kunkel gives to the folks arriving by bus to the hard working ladies preparing a great turkey meal.
True western hospitality continues when one of the tour buses which had broken down finally arrives long after the dinner show was finished. No turning away these folks because they were late but a hot meal was dished up and an extra show was performed.
The joy on the faces of the guests at the Barn can be seen during every performance. For more than 20 years, the Kunkel family of Hill Spring has opened the doors of its southern Alberta barn to visitors in a unique family venue called The Great Canadian Barn Dance and Dinner Show.

All the family and band members have special talents that are highlighted throughout the show. Grampa Lloyd leads the band and keeps the guests laughing. A wonderful guitar solo is played by brother Larry and a Huron Christmas carol sung by Grampa Eddie.
The young Kunkel boys demonstrate their talents by playing various instruments. Rylan dazzled me with his performance of the Bumble Boogie
Trevor Kunkel played a wonderful duet on the mandolin with his son Ronan on the violin. And the most beautiful songs were sung by Candy. Together they generously give their best for the folks visiting the Barn.
Ronan charmed the boots off
everyone with his singing
“Santa’s Coming In a Pickup Truck”.
Next was the Cowboy Country Christmas event. Starting a 4 p.m. there was a bonfire, hot-apple cider, wagon rides, skating and paint can curling. After eating that great Alberta … turkey the guests were encouraged to sing a rousing round of 12 Days of Christmas. Then it was time to kick up our heels.
Everyone headed upstairs for dance lessons and some lively country music to dance to. Now if you were found sitting down for long, you might be asked to dance by a Barn booster!
On any given weekend, there are between 10 and 15 teenagers and a few adults who volunteer their time to come to the dance and help ensure everyone is having a good time.
Great time I did have!
