Bird watching in Alberta

Bird watching - Alberta plays host to 385 species of birds, only 51 of which are from the North American continent.

The place is clearly a transit hub of choice for our feathered friends who play the wondrous sport of migration! This adds to Alberta’s charm as a bird watching destination of prime choice.

The Waterton Lakes National Park has the largest checklist, so this is Alberta’s birding destination of first choice for those who would like to add to their sightings in large numbers. You can see hummingbirds, herons, loons and owls and a bird watching guide can help you sight some rare birds such as the Pileated Woodpecker.

The Banff National Park is a challenge for Waterton with an impressive checklist of more than 260 birds. Early summer is the best time for a trip, but you can see many birds during any time of the year. A wonderful opportunity to photograph birds and wildlife.

The Varied Thrush and the Townsend Warbler are two birds that need a skill of recognizing bird songs. Acquiring and practicing such a capability is a bonus a guide can give you when you choose it as a birding destination.

Most Alberta visitors would be surprised to know that even industrial Calgary is a haven for birds! The Inglewood Sanctuary is located here and you can see Peregrine Falcons at the University. The Cross Conservation Area in the vicinity is a model of how urban residents can contribute in meaningful way to promote their natural resources.

Coaldale near Lethbridge has a 70 acre stretch of wetlands that serves as a Birds of Prey Center. It is home to hawks, falcon, eagles and owls.

Elfie Hall Photography -- Hawk

Elfie Hall is a local photographer in the County of Vulcan.

Photography has been my hobby for quite some time, however since retirement in 2005 from a software company in Calgary, I have been able to spend a lot more time at it. My first CANON DSLR was a retirement present and I have been adding to it ever since.

Pictures include many varieties of birds, eagles, hawks, owls. Landscapes, trees and flowers. Pets and animals, the City of Calgary Zoo, Oldies and so much more! Really great pitures.

Elfie Hall - Photography Living in Southern Alberta by Little Bow Resort gives me plenty of photo opportunities and bird watching. From my house I can observe birds such as the Bald Eagles, Pelicans, Ospreys and other Hawks. Also I can see wildlife such as Coyotes and Deer.

Another favorite subject of mine is horses - luckily one of my friends breeds horses and gives me access to them for photography. This photo was taken at a nearby farm. Horses in Sunset
