#1 Discovery

There are 2680 gas wells and 530 oil wells in the County. The first well was drilled in 1929 (named Well One) by Alberta Gas & Fuel east of the town of Vulcan.

OIL & GAS: A Mile Below the Wheat

Let’s travel below the earth’s surface, into the crust, a mile below the wheat. To find black gold – oil and its partner natural gas – both plentiful resources in the County of Vulcan.

As you travel through the County you’ll see stretches of cropland local farmers plant and harvest each year, but the resource far below the surface has taken millions of years to form.

This valuable & versatile reserve came from prehistoric plants and animals. Their decomposition and great pressure by rocks inside the Earth’s crust led to the formation of hydrocarbon compounds in the form of crude oil and natural gas, trapped in porous rock.
