"The Purple People Eater" was a novelty song, written and performed by Sheb Wooley (1921-2003), that reached #1 in the Billboard pop charts in 1958. The song has remained popular for over forty years, and sold over one hundred million copies.
This is a bouncy, happy song whose style is very much of its time and genre, reflecting both the simple early rock and roll that was hugely popular and the public fascination with flying saucers and aliens.
The rather silly lyrics tell how a strange monster (described as a "one-eyed, one-horned flying purple people eater") descends to earth because it wants to be in a rock 'n' roll band.
Public fascination with flying saucers and aliens is well known. The town of Vulcan, Alberta is home to the world famous U.S.S. Enterprise Space ship at the Trek Station.
All of these elements combined have made Vulcan a tourist destination for avid Star Trekkie fans and put the town on the world map and the map of Alberta. The town of Vulcan is located on hour south-east on highway #23 from the city of Calgary, Alberta.
According to a plaque greeting visitors to Vulcan, that destination is “Third Planet from the sun, North American Continent, Province of Alberta, County of Vulcan.”
