Star Trek History
The town was named in 1910 all the Star Trek History began!
Contrary to popular belief the Town of Vulcan was not named after Mr Spock’s fictitious home planet.
Rather, 56 years before the first Star Trek episode aired on television, Vulcan was named by a Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR)surveyor who had a special interest in Roman mythology.
Since at that time the town sat at the highest elevation of the railroad in the prairies, he wanted to name it after one of the Greek gods from Mount Olympus.
However, Vulcan is actually the Roman god of fire and volcanoes, said to live beneath Mount Etna in Sicily or under the island of Vulcano.
While the CPR surveyor got his ancient gods confused, his error has worked to the town’s great advantage.
2007 - This year Spock Days/Glaxayfest Parade included:
Aron Eisenberg and Max Grodenchik actors from Deep Space Nine and many others in costumes
as you can see in the parade photos ...
More fun was planned including: The NEW! Virtual Reality Game - Vulcan Space Adventure
Star Trek Tourism
Also the Telus World of Science Star Lab, the parade, pancake breakfast, Chautauqua, bed races, bucket brigade, slo-pitch tournament,Galaxyfest Banquet and Cabaret.
All of these elements combined have made Vulcan a tourist destination for avid Star Trekkie fans and put the town on the world map.
According to a plaque greeting visitors to Vulcan, that destination is “Third Planet from the sun, North American Continent, Province of Alberta, County of Vulcan.”
